Rand barely has his jeans on as he bolts out the door, breaking into a sprint as soon as he steps foot in his gravel driveway. He doesn't bother trying to start his car—it had been dead since he tried to start it back when he needed to pick the boys up from the airport—and instead continues to run, down the road and into the forest.

He ignored the way his lungs ache and his knees hurt, and instead pushes himself further, wheezing as he reaches the boat docks through the woods in just about 7 minutes.

Rand coughs violently as his trembling hands fiddle with a rope tying a wooden boat to a dock. He doesn't bother to look at whose it is and whether anyone was coming, instead pushing from the muddy banks and throwing himself inside it to get a headstart.

He fumbles with the oars, getting a steady paddle going and trying his best to keep on a straightforward path. He always hated the water, especially after all the shit that went down, so he never had practice with boats or anything. He gets most of the way to the land, and decides it's a good idea now to wade the rest of the way onto shore.

Rand, after 2-3 more minutes of struggling in the mud, reaches land, and once again breaks into a sprint, still having barely any breath left in him after running halfway across town. He spots Rolan just ahead, and closes the final bit of distance between them by tackling the other man.

They tumble to the ground, Rand's vision blurring as he heaves in deep breaths, clinging to Rolan like he was the only thing keeping him alive at the moment.

Maybe he was.
